Book Creator is a student-friendly publishing app. It is my go-to choice for elementary authors.

It allows writers to select some formatting options.

Easy tool selection lets students design pages which can include free-drawn images and narration.

There are publishing options that fit a variety of needs, including iBooks that retains the audible recordings.

Designing Visuals in Pic Collage

I was thrilled to find Pic Collage for Kids. After using Pic Collage, I appreciated many of the features, but knew that the social features were a cause of concern at the elementary level. I believe images can be powerful learning tools and love to have students use them in projects.

My students in grades 1-3 created season collages after watching a BrainPop Jr. movie. 1st and 2nd graders simply searched season names. 3rd graders were challenged to think of favorite activities of each season and use those as search words.

Students in grades 4 and 5 showed a group of animals or plants or landforms. Students in these grades analyzed examples before designing their own. The examples drew their attention to problems with font, color, size and backgrounds.
